About our Program

In 1984, Cst. Len Bailey of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service along with the Chamber of Commerce and Queenstown Association began exploring the feasibility of instituting the Crime Stoppers program in our city. After a year of planning, Crime Stoppers of Sault Ste. Marie started operating on June 20, 1985. In 1988, Crime Stoppers of Sault Ste. Marie expanded to include the district of Algoma.

The concept has developed into a combination of efforts by local media, businesses, civic and social clubs, law enforcement agencies, and the public. Donations of airtime, newspaper space, and reward monies have established Crime Stoppers as an effective tool to fight crime in the area.

We are a non-profit charitable community service program. Crime Stoppers helps solve and prevent crime in your community by providing a way for the public to anonymously report criminal activity. Our program encourages people to call us with information to solve crimes already committed, ones about to occur, and/or the whereabouts of wanted persons, missing persons, narcotics, and stolen property.

Crime Stoppers is based on the simple principle that for every crime committed, someone other than the criminal has information that might solve the crime. The program was created to combat the three major problems faced by law enforcement in generating that information.

  1. The fear of reprisal
  2. Apathy
  3. Reluctance to get Involved

We resolve these problems by offering anonymity to persons who provide information about crimes and paying rewards when the information leads to an arrest.
